What Is Additive Synthesis?

Additive synthesis can be described as an extension of the draw-bar organ; A set of sine-wave oscillators in harmonic series are mixed together in different amounts to shape the tone of a sound. The legendary Hammond Organ had just nine oscillators, a limitation imposed by the physical size and cost of the instrument. However with the help of virtual oscillators, the real power of additive synthesis can be realised. With enough oscillators whose amplitude can modulated, it's theoretically possible to create any sound.
